Believing in yourself is basic marketing. Really.
I came to this conclusion after helping Zoë with her biography poster project today on Lena Horne, someone she only knows as Glinda the Good Witch in The Wiz. I’ll be the first to admit it: I came up with Lena Horne as the perfect subject after my daughter suggested she wanted to do her biography on Pocahontas. The Disney Princess version of Pocahontas. My husband and I even suggested Sacajawea, but that didn’t fly very well.
But Glinda the Good Witch? The pretty woman who sang to Dorothy/Diana Ross? Yes!
We recorded “The Wiz” on our DVR several months ago, and she has watched it a lot even though we also have “The Wizard of Oz” movie on a DVD. Three words: No flying monkeys.
So, today we watched YouTube clips of Ms. Horne in her films from the ’40s like “Cabin in the Sky.” I also found an interview she did with Ed Bradley where she talked frankly about her struggles with racism in Hollywood and in life. Zoë and I watched it a few times.
I read aloud Lena Horne’s obituary that appeared in The New York Times last May until she asked me to stop because it went on “waaaaaaaaaayyyyy too long” – her words. She got the gist of the story though.
Zoë asked me to explain why the world used to be gray and when it turned to color. She was surprised and a bit confused to learn that Lena Horne couldn’t sing in certain places once upon a time. We dramatically sang “Stormy Weather” together around the house after we watched that particular movie clip and made each other laugh.
The next time Zoë sees Lena Horne sing, “Believe in Yourself,” when she watches “The Wiz,” it will undoubtedly mean something a little different to her.
